Wait, isn’t Mayonaise already Low-Carb? Actually, for the most part it is indeed! Mayonaise is a rather ingenious invention that has a few simple ingredients, and when mixed in the proper order to form an emulsion yields a very tasty concoction! Unfortunately (or fortunately for some) most store bought mayonaise products have a dirty little secret that few may be aware of.
Before we get to that little nugget, let’s go over what ingredients make up what we affectionately call “Mayo“. The basic ingredients are:
- Oil (Can be any kind of digestible oil)
- Egg Yolks
- Lemon Juice or Vinegar
- Spices (To taste)
When I first started looking at foods to eat, I started looking at labels on the products. Mayonaise seemed like a perfectly logical food, since it should be a high fat, as well as a low-carb product. However, I noticed that almost all of the Mayo products out there were created with Soybean oil. My doctor had warned me to stay away from Soy based products due to their potential impact on hormones such prohibiting testosterone (not ideal for men), and promoting estrogen (not ideal for men, but could be beneficial to women) development. I’ve been reading various sources of information that dispute this fact through studies though. I’m not trying to vilify soybean products, as I have been quite fond of them previously, but I wanted to call it out if you are someone who is watching their sex hormone levels for various reasons. Please post your thoughts in the comments on if you use soy products, and if this is a concern for you or not.
I was also surprised to see that various forms of sugar are included as some of the spices for the mayo products I took at a look at. While I believe they are in low quantities, as told by the nutrition labels, I wondered if you had used a larger serving would the sugars add up.
